Best Accountability Apps and Sites

Different tools use different kinds of pressure. Pick the one that matches what actually gets you moving.

Written by Jim Zwetsloot, founder of GoalAllies. Last updated: 2026-10-09

The best accountability app depends on the pressure that works for you. Focusmate and Flow Club give you live company. stickK, Beeminder, Forfeit and Commit Club put money at stake. Habitica, Cohorty, Daily Pact and Habit Huddle build daily habits. Supporti, GoalsWon and GoalAllies give you a person to check in with.

Quick picks: the best accountability app for each need

Ask what has made you follow through in the past, then pick the tool built around that. We make GoalAllies, so read our own pick with that in mind. Prices are as shown on each tool's own site in October 2026 and can change.

  • Best for a free weekly check-in with one matched person: GoalAllies, our own tool.
  • Best for a paid human coach: GoalsWon, $90 a month. See accountability partner vs coach to choose between a coach and a peer.

The tools in detail

Grouped by the kind of pressure each one uses. Every profile has the same four lines.

Focusmate

Scheduled video sessions of 25, 50 or 75 minutes where you work quietly beside another member.

  • Type: Live co-working
  • Cost: Free plan: 3 sessions a week. Plus: $8 a month billed annually or $12 monthly.
  • Best for: Starting and finishing a task now.
  • Limit: A session, not an ongoing relationship.

Flow Club

Sessions from 30 minutes to 3 hours with up to 9 people and a volunteer host.

  • Type: Live group co-working
  • Cost: $40 a month or $400 a year; 50% off for students and non-profits; free to try.
  • Best for: Structured focus time in a group.
  • Limit: Paid, and a group rather than one partner.

GoalAllies

Matches you one to one with someone who shares your goal, a language and a workable time zone. You chat in the app and share a weekly plan and a short report.

  • Type: Partner matching
  • Cost: Free while we build our community.
  • Best for: Ongoing check-ins with a person who works on a goal of their own.
  • Limit: Newer and smaller, so a match can take a while. No live sessions.

How matching works

Supporti

Matches you with a buddy for 7 days of daily mutual support. You report back and chat each day, then rate each other and choose to continue or get a new buddy.

  • Type: Partner matching (mobile app)
  • Cost: Two-week free trial, then $15.99 a month or $129.99 a year plus tax (its help page).
  • Best for: Daily habits with a matched buddy.
  • Limit: Mobile app only, and paid after the trial.

GoalsWon

Pairs you with an accountability coach who checks in with you every day and replies with feedback and advice. Its home page says the coach is a person, not an AI.

  • Type: Paid human coach
  • Cost: $90 a month. Free trial of 7 days on the monthly plan and 14 days on the yearly plan.
  • Best for: People who want a professional to reply to them every day and are happy to pay for it.
  • Limit: A paid service, and the coach is not a peer working on a goal of their own.

Accountability partner vs coach

stickK

You state a goal, put down money and choose what happens to it if you do not stick to the goal.

  • Type: Commitment contract
  • Cost: Free to use; you choose the stake.
  • Best for: People who respond to a penalty.
  • Limit: The pressure comes from the stake, not from regular conversation.

Beeminder

Tracks a number you care about and shows a red line to stay on. If you cross the line, it charges your payment method.

  • Type: Goal tracking with commitment contracts
  • Cost: See beeminder.com for current plans.
  • Best for: People who want a tracker with consequences.
  • Limit: Built around numbers you can measure.

Forfeit

You set a task, a deadline and a stake and send proof before the deadline. Its AI partner, Overlord, chats with you and sends reminders.

  • Type: Commitment contracts with an AI partner
  • Cost: You choose the stake; see forfeit.app for plans.
  • Best for: Concrete tasks you can prove.
  • Limit: Money is charged when you miss.

Commit Club

Challenges built on daily check-ins, social accountability and optional money pledges. You can name friends to hold you accountable.

  • Type: Daily challenges with optional pledges
  • Cost: Free for solo challenges; pledges are optional.
  • Best for: Clear daily tasks where a pledge keeps you checking in.
  • Limit: Its home page does not show how much you can pledge, so read its terms before you do.

Habitica

A habit and productivity app that treats your life like a game, with an avatar and gold you earn by checking off tasks.

  • Type: Habit game
  • Cost: Free to sign up; mobile apps and web.
  • Best for: People who like games and rewards.
  • Limit: The pressure comes from the game, not from a person.

Cohorty

A habit app that places you in a cohort of people building a similar habit. You tap once each day you show up, with no posts or comments.

  • Type: Daily habit cohorts
  • Cost: Free plan: 1 challenge and unlimited check-ins. Plus: $3 a month.
  • Best for: Simple daily habits like walking, stretching or reading.
  • Limit: On the free plan, missing a day resets you to day 1, as its pricing page states. Plus has a No Reset option.

Daily Pact

You create a group of friends, share an invite code (up to 50 members) and everyone checks in daily with one tap. It adds streaks, leaderboards and badges.

  • Type: Habit groups (mobile app)
  • Cost: 14-day free trial, then $0.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $39.99 once.
  • Best for: Daily habits kept together with friends.
  • Limit: Built around groups you already know, not matched partners.

Habit Huddle

Habit groups called huddles with daily check-ins, streaks and monthly seasons with a leaderboard. It runs on web, iOS and Android.

  • Type: Habit groups with seasons
  • Cost: Has a free tier; see habithuddle.com for paid plans.
  • Best for: People who like a community around a habit, with seasons and rankings.
  • Limit: You join huddles; it is not one to one partner matching.

What we left out

Most tools above have their own comparison page with GoalAllies, built from facts read on the tool's own site (see the links in each profile). We left StudyStream out. We could not confirm its current prices and features from its own pages, and we would rather say nothing than guess. Other tools may be missing for the same reason.

Combining tools

The kinds of pressure stack. A common pattern is an accountability partner for the weekly check-in and a live session on the days you need to sit down and work. A simple habit tracker covers the daily basics. If you are curious how a partner differs from live co-working, read body doubling vs an accountability partner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free accountability app?

It depends on what motivates you. Focusmate has a free plan with 3 sessions a week, and stickK and Habitica are free to use. GoalAllies is free while we build our community. Try the one that matches the kind of pressure you respond to.

What is the difference between an accountability app and an accountability partner?

An app supplies a mechanism: a timer, a stake or a game. A partner supplies a person who knows your commitments and asks how it went. Many people use an app for tracking and a partner for the conversation.

Is a paid coach better than an accountability partner?

They are different things. A coach is a paid professional who replies to you; GoalsWon, for example, costs $90 a month. A partner is a peer with a goal of their own, and on GoalAllies that is free. See accountability partner vs coach.

Are apps where you put money on a goal a good idea?

They suit people who respond to a penalty. If losing money would stress you out or you cannot afford the stake, pick a different kind of pressure. Read the terms before you commit any money.

Which accountability tool is best for studying?

A study partner who checks your plan each week helps over a long revision period, and a live co-working session helps on a hard evening. See our guide to finding a study partner.

How does GoalAllies compare with Focusmate?

Focusmate runs scheduled live sessions with another member. GoalAllies matches you with one partner for ongoing check-ins. They solve different problems. Our GoalAllies vs Focusmate page has the details.

Is GoalAllies an app?

GoalAllies is a website you use in your browser. There are no iOS or Android apps at the moment.
